I have tried several times to delete various subfolders. They always end up in my Trash folder and cannot be deleted, even though messages, as expected, disappear permanently when I close Thunderbird. Am I doing something wrong?

If this is an IMAP mail account folder: Try this: Unsubscribe from seeing the folder. If you have been synchronising subscribed folders a copy will be left in your Profile folder. Delete folder - it goes to Trash right click on Trash and select 'Empty Trash'

Logon to webmail account and delete the folder from server.
