How do you send a text email to another account?

I installed mozilla thunderbird and I believe I completed all the setups including email verifications. I can receive emails, but I can't send any text when I write to another email. I can only send the subject. I don't see how to add text when I select the "write" function. I'm an old XP Outlook Express user, but now I've moved to Windows 8.1, so I need an email service similar to that. What am I not doing that I can't add text to outgoing emails?

It seems like the message part of the new message window is not open.

Float your mouse curser over the bottom of the message window, and when it changes to a double headed arrow (like the screen shot below), left click it and drag it down to show the message pane.

Good luck

btw, neither XP Outlook Express or Thunderbird are email services, they're email clients (software that accesses a remote service on another computer). The email service is the company that provides you with your email, like gmail, hotmail, or in my case dslextreme.com.
