My husbands laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C850D). After removing a virus from his laptop yesterday, we have been unable to use Firefox (however we can still use Internet Explorer, which we hate using).

When I open it, I get a usual web browser page, however there is no address in the address bar (our home page is actually www.google.com.au, which is usually displayed upon opening firefox). When I physically enter the address in the address bar (for example, how home page), I get a "Mozilla Crash Report" window come up stating that you'll try to restore my tabs when windows reopens. I also get a "Plugin Container for Firefox has stopped working" window open. I have two options, "Check online for a solution and close the program" which doesn't actually do anything but close the program, or "Close the program".

I have tried downloading an update, however it get's interrupted before it can complete the installation. The message i get is: "'Firefox' Setup. Your download was interrupted. Please click the OK button to continue". After I click OK, I get a message saying: "Firefox closed unexpectedly while starting. This might be caused by add-ons or other problems. You can try to resolve the problem by troubleshooting in Safe Mode. You can also skip troubleshooting and try refreshing Firefox". Refreshing results in the same above process. I have tried Safe Mode, however I still can't open any websites and get the same Plugin crash reports. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, however it also gets interrupted before it can fully install. So I copy and pasted the firefox program folder from my laptop onto my husbands laptop, but I'm still getting the same issue. So I attempted another update, but still get the same interrupted message.

Please advise what I need to do to get Firefox to run properly.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

When I uninstalled Firefox, I went through the appropriate channels and uninstalled correctly, without removing all my bookmarks, etc. It wouldn't reinstall for me, which is why I copied over files from my laptop that I knew were functional. I have deleted those files as it obviously hasn't worked. I also checked his firewall and Firefox was not even listed in there, so was unable to uncheck and get Firefox to ask for permission. What else can I do to get Firefox to work?
