I am using FF ver.46.0.1,

I have my Bookmarks Toolbar set to show along the top of the browser.

Lately, I have noticed that some of the icons that I have bookmarked and inserted here are grey circular icons that look like a globe.

Other icons are what I want them to be, ie in color and the logo for the site I have bookmarked.

When I drag a new site or copy and paste a new site to my Bookmarks Toolbar, some icons are in color, and some are the grey circle that I describe.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Do the browser.chrome.* prefs still have their default value?

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

It is also possible that an extension is causing this problem and isn't working properly.

It looks like the same icon. What are their names? What function?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Thanks for your quick response FRED.

In answer to your question "It looks like the same icon. What are their names? What function?" they are the icons for two news sites that I recently bookmarked and dragged to my Bookmarks toolbar. Anytime I drag an address of some site I want on my toolbar, the icon becomes the gray circle as I showed in my pic.

So these are bookmarks. Right click and check the web address.

more options

The web addresses in right-click "Properties" are correct and exactly the same as in the original bookmark.

Did you try to click such a generic icon to see if that makes Firefox reload the favicon from the server?

That is currently the only way to reload an icon because the favicon reloader extension is no longer available.

more options

Yes, if you mean I clicked on the grey icon and reloaded the page, and still grey icon. Just tried it with CNN, when I drag it to the toolbar, a grey icon. It seems any new site that I drag, it turns into grey icon.

cor-el, you are my new hero! You solved it. I changed the value on

browser.chrome.site_icons;true (to true from false)

Thanks for your help and the others who worked on it too.

Two days later the problem I mentioned above returned to haunt me. Did go back into about:config and made sure it was reset to true and reset it to false and reset it back to true, and rebooted computer and still the problem is there ie grey icons???

more options

Is this only on the Bookmarks Toolbar or also on tabs and in the history?

Are you using any cleanup software like CCleaner or use security software that has such features?

more options

In the past hour I discovered I had an extension called Favicon Picker 2 enabled. I deleted it, and now it seems that icons are showing in color again. Hopefully my saga is ended. Thanks for your kind assistance cor-el. I am not closing my support request for a day or two to see if this issue is solved.
