thunderbird cannot connect to gmail. I have double checked all settings. Help!?

I have established an account with Gmail, which I can access through my web browser(Firefox). I have added Thunderbird to my PC. The same settings have been applied to each system. Thunderbird cannot connect to Gmail. It keeps asking me for my password, which I reenter. It tells me that it's wrong. I know it's correct since I can connect, using that password, to Gmail via Firefox. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

When I try to send an email, the connection to the Gmail server times out, therefore the message does not go,

I made an additional change in my settings and guess what --- it now works.
