I want the emails to remain unread in the webhost mail even after they are downloaded onto thunderbird. How do I fix that?

We have a shared email account at work that everyone checks. I have downloaded emails on Thunderbird but others continue to use the webmail version online. My Thunderbird marks all emails read when it downloads. I do not want it to do that. I want the webmail to remain unread for the sake of other users. How can I fix this problem.

I tried as instructed above but that does not fix it. Your instructions make it so when I press to read an email it does not mark it as read (this is in thunderbird). But in the Webhost it is still read because it got downloaded on thunderbird. (thunder bird marks the emails read in the webmail.)

When login in to my webmail I can set mail to be marked read directly, after 5 sec .... or never. Maybe you should check this.

Also with the suggested solution and webmail set to never, my webmail stays unread until someone opens it in a separate window in webmail. (Open it in Thunderbird doesn't affect it).

At some time mails have to be marked read thou.

I could recreate it with webmail set to direct (not never)
