Are you writing in HTML or plain TEXT? Check what your encoding ( view > text encoding ) are

My swedish å ä ö Å Ä Ö looks fine

This is how the letters look like.

I write the text straight into the Thunderbird email browser.

If I change text-encoding from UNICODE to WESTERN (or the other way around) my letters also become unreadable. It all depends on the authors settings My bank for example sends in an old codepage ?????) Change how you view it.
