Imported filters are slow to edit and using lots of memory. Can I use a regular text editor to search and edit changes in my filters? As an alternative, a keyword search can be added to the filter editor.

Chosen solution

They are stored in files named msgFilterRules.dat, one per account. They are plain text files and may be edited but be careful with the syntax and structure. And close Thunderbird before modifying these or any other files in the profile, else your changes might be lost when Thunderbird does close.
