Why does Thunderbird not recognise my new Google password?

I've recently changed my google access to two-step verification and now Thunderbird will not send gmails. Every time I try and download emails I have to log into google and go through the two-step process. Every time I try to send an email Thunderbird asks me for my smtp password, which is clearly shown in my Outgoing settings, and refuses to accept it. I have uninstalled and installed Thunderbird, changed my google password. I use Norton, and have turned it off, rebooted, and still cannot use Thunderbird, so it can't be a firewall issue. Can find no help for this particular problem.

Gmail users should read gmail instructions. Glad you got it working.

Did you generate an application specific password at gmail? If not you need to. Then use that app specific password instead of your normal password when Thunderbird requests a gmail password. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

FYI: Thunderbird does not accept or reject passwords. It provides the password you gave it when the providers server asks for one. You need you need to provide Thunderbird with the password the provider is looking for.

Is the gmail password different to the google one? I have given Thunderbird the new password for google. How do I find out what password gmail is asking for? I will try this app specific password.

That seems to have worked so far - many thanks for your excellent advice. This should be on the main Support page because I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem

Now I have another problem. Every time I start Thunderbird and try to send a message it asks me for my password. So I use the same app specific password each time which I kept. Is there a box somewhere I haven't ticked?
