why is Quantum using 90+% cpu, memory usaage & disk i/o?
Since the recent Quantum upgrade, Firefox has slowed my laptop and desktop machine to a crawl. It crashed my desktop several times and has hung my laptop consistently.
CPU utilization has been consistent above 90%, often hanging at 100%. It's so bad that my typing will lag for 10-15 seconds while waiting for the display to catch up. Memory utilization seldom drops below 50%, often hanging at 90 to 100%. Laptop has 8GB of memory. Desktop used to have 4GB but upgraded it to 12gb after Firefox kept sucking up 100% and crashing it. Since going to 12GB, Firefox still sucks up 40+% easily. Disk I/O shoots up to 90-100% as soon as Firefox is activated. It remains high even if only one tab is active. It will show at least 4 occurrences in the Task Manager, even when only one tab is active. While disk I/O may eventually settle down somewhat, memory usage always remains high. See attached PDF. Running Windows 10 on all machines and is current on all Windows updates.
You guys had the previous release pretty much bug free and running OK. And then you had to mess it up.
I have not updated to the Quantum release on my Surface Pro and it's running just fine and has none of the problems that I've been experiencing on my desktop and laptop. I'm seriously considering going back to the previous release.
I'd appreciate some help with with problem. Thanks.

Hey PKShadow & JSHER2000,
I didn't hear back from either one of you. So, I removed/uninstalled the Quantum (v57) release from my ThinkPad E545, Windows10. I went back to the previous release (56.0.2) that worked well and didn't have any problems and re-installed it.
56.0.2 is running fine. It's still somewhat of a cpu hog at startup and opening new tabs but, unlike the Quantum release, it will consistently settle down and will suck up far less memory. Right now, it's taking up less than 10% of cpu & 35% of memory.
Just before I uninstalled the Quantum release, it was consistently sucking up over 80% cpu and 70% memory. See attached screen print in which overall cpu usage hit 99%. The Quantum release also causes Windows Defender antivirus to run consistently & taking 10%+ cpu on average. Right now running 56.0.2, Windows Defender antivirus doesn't even show up on Task Manager.
I'm going to uninstall the Quantum release from my other desktop and reinstall 56.0.2. As noted earlier, I'd added mem to it bringing the total to 12GB. All that did was to increase Firefox mem usage to 70+% and continue to take performance down to an unacceptable crawl where I can't even type email.
I'm totally dissatisfied with the Quantum release. Val

One is to update your Video Card Drivers.
Could you go to the Firefox Menu Bar then--> Help --> Troubleshooting Information and copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum. Please take a look in the Accessibility Section if Accessibility is set to "True" there.
If yes, can you please Copy/Paste this whole section into a reply in the forum and see if the following fixes the performance problem: Go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security then under Permissions check the setting to prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser.
If fixes and you update Video Card then no need to send.
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
Please see the reply from philipp in this thread regarding accessibility services: Firefox 57 hangs up.
Thanks for your prompt reply.
Video drivers are current. No newer drivers are available.
Accessibility Activated' is set to FALSE. See attached screen print.
Hey PKShadow & JSHER2000,
Any other suggestions?
Desktop Mem usage continues to increase. Had increased desktop mem from 4GB to 12GB. Mem usage now peaks out at over 70%. Can't even type email without huge screen lag times. This is not acceptable.
Unless you guys have any other ideas, I'm backing Quantum release out and going back to previous release. My other desktop and Surface Pro are still running the previous release and working just fine. I do not intend to update to Quantum on those machines.
Later ... Val
