I have a Mac laptop and run Thunderbird daily. It can go weeks without any problems and then suddenly show a message Unable to receive messages IMAP may have exceeded the number of accounts. I try rebooting the computer, changing passwords from a remote computer, etc and it doesn't clear it up. Suddenly for no reason, the next time I try to get email it asks for the password and everything works fine. I do know that just before this error message comes on, the mail seems to be slowing down and there is a delay, it acts like it is overloaded.

if you have a mac you probably have other apple products connected to the account. Try turning off some of them. Apple apparently do not allow for more than one device to connect at a time, instead of moderating their efforts they consume all available connection.
