Hi I was using an older version of firefox but had to change my OS from win7 to Win10. I used Password exporter to save all the passwords to a back up file. I installed the latest Firefox but had no way to import my saved passwords as Password exporter no longer works on later versions, which resulted in installing Firefox 56.0b2 (64bt). Installed password exporter and imported my passwords. On a number of ocasions, I had to open password exporter to see what the password was when I went to a imported bookmark, but once entered, the auto fill worked and opened the site. This worked fine for about a week when, for no apparent reason, the bookmark star dissapeared and the menu bar - bookmark this page had stopped working. I would like to run the latest Firefox but dont know how to import from the password exporter back up file as the latest version doesn't allow password exporter??? Hope someone can help? :)

First, let's check the bookmarks file for corruption.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

Hi Fred, Thanks for helping. Nothing happens when clicking on the Verify Integrity button?

I am using [v56.0b2].

Hmm. Nothing at all? No checklist?

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

Note that you can copy matching copies of logins.json and key4.db to the Firefox profile folder to transfer the passwords. If you have key3.db and not key4.db as key file then make sure to remove an existing key4.db in the profile folder.

If you rename/remove all places.sqlite files (including possible places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal) then Firefox tries to rebuild the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder. This may fail if this recent backup is corrupted and you may have to restore an older backup manually.

Thanks for trying to help......but... I'm lost. I assume its better to be running a later/latest version of firefox? I also assume a remove program and wipe (CCleaner) and then a clean install should remove the problem. If I upgrade how do I.... 1. Save/backup the bookmarks/passwords from [v56.0b2]? 2. Import the saved bookmarkspasswords file from said backup file to the new install.? 3. Access and read/see the paswords within firefox (for using on other devices where I dont save passwords)? Apologies for being a bit of a dumbass, I have just installed Win10 and hate it. I cant find anything and have had to install 'Destroy Windows10 Spying'. Its all abit confusing for an Old fella like me. :)

2. Import the saved bookmarkspasswords file from said backup file to the new install.?

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer/profile. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

Hey... Fred, Cor-el, Thank you both very much for trying to help. While trying to use your advice, clearly my FF browser was broken, as nothing you suggested worked (no reflection on your advice purely an issue on my client). Unfortunately, its all a bit too much. I've tried to understand and download some of the add ons, but its a mess. I have a zip file for passwordfox which wants to be opened by VideoLan. I cant find anything to change that on windows10. I have managed to use the update on FF to get to the latest v64.ob14. The Passwords dont appear on the sign-in pages. I have managed to export the bookmarks to a HTML file and, using the FF-password-exporter I have an encrypted file.

The problem now is no longer the bookmarks, as the update has resolved that. The problem is the passwords. How do I get my password back? Other than uninstalling all of firefox and going back to v56 and strting again (same problem is likely to happen again), I have no idea. And my head hurts. :) Thanks for trying.

Have now installed 7zip and opened the passwordfox ZIP. Installed and ran the program which produces a list which shows no usernames or passwords. I had a great system with win7 ultimate and FF developer. Everything worked fine. Is this really progress? Win10, an operating system that takes the Personal away from PC (Personal Computer). Wont let you change settings without their permissions. Having to allow every Tom, Dick and Harry from MS to access and look at all your personal files. Then Firefox, its secure and adaptable. You can change themes, add little touches to make it look and run better and add Add-ons for better functionality........ Only you cant. You cant because they change it and then nothing works anymore. Really!

If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

I dislike the current version so much, I am still using v54. I will Not lose the great add-ons I have.

Before you do that, how bookmarks are stored is different between some versions.
