When I open a saved web page offline, often images won't appear unless I reconnect to the internet. Why is that?

When I save web pages using Save Page as 'web page, complete', then I open the saved page offline, images will be missing. This has been happening since about two years. If I open the file again while connected, the images will appear! I'm using Firefox 72.0.2 on Mac

Firefox stores extra image files if they are part of the page code (<img> tags). If images are loaded by JavaScript via XHR in the background or are (background) images loaded via CSS rules then the images might not be saved and you need an internet connection to reload them.

Given that the purpose of archiving a web page is to be able to see it again in the future, even if the web site is long gone, why is it that Firefox is not able to save all the images that appear on the screen for a given page?

You might want to try the SingleFile extension. It won't save a perfect copy of a page, but it seems to do a good job of saving the images that are showing on a page.
