Someone made a suggestion (thank you Matt) but can't find the that response here. Matt said this might help:

Restart Thunderbird (TB) with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". I assume you would then try the update it keep asking for.

This was done as I was able to start TB and just tried that. On the help Menu and then on the About tab: It said: Thunderbird 78.3.3 (32-bit) Release notes.

So 78.3.3. was installed but TB tells me every day it must be 'Updated' but then states the computer must re-started. If I don't, TB simple closes. If I do restart and try again to update: TB closes and the endless computer restarts begins again. I would guess TB see's a need to update but it doesn't really and goes into a software loop (with no correct answer). I tried to contact a person at Mozilla/Thunderbird and can find no human help.

Perform a clean re-installation as follows:

  1. Uninstall Thunderbird (do not worry, this does not remove your profile data). Reboot IF prompted.
  2. Go to C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) and delete the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if it exists in either of those locations.
  3. Run the setup executable (exe) file. If all goes well, Tbird should start without a fuss and not nag you about the update.
