I've been having a particularly embarrassing problem for some time now. I can't send e-mails with large attachments (over 3 MB). Each time the error msg "Sending the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to the outgoing server (SMTP) "smtp.orange.fr" has expired. Please try again". appears after a few minutes. I don't know if the problem comes from my Orange access provider or from your software? But for your information, I tried with Outlook and I don't have this problem! But as I have been using your software for years and I don't want to change it because it is user-friendly and easy to use compared to others, I would like to find a solution to my problem . Thank you very much for your help. Grégory76
As long as you have the correct settings for the outgoing server, smtp.orange.fr on 465, SSL/TLS, the most likely cause of timeouts is an antivirus program scanning outgoing mail. What is the antivirus and its settings? The TB profile folder should be excluded from AV scanning. The message size limit for Orange is 25 MB, so that is not an issue.
Hello, Thank you for your reply, I am using Bitdefender Total security. I checked the firewall and it clearly indicates that thunderbird is excluded from the scan. So I don't think it's from the anti-virus. Especially since when I use Outlook, it works with large attachments! What do you think ? Thank you. cordially Gregory76
The most reliable way to see if an antivirus is affecting TB is to run Windows in safe mode, which bypasses startup apps such as AV. Even then, you may have to adjust Bitdefender's startup options so it doesn't launch in Windows safe mode. Bitdefender has been the source of numerous complaints on this forum.
