unpinned Firefox icon from the Windows Task Bar, where did the icon go

Usually when you install Firefox you have a choice of including start-up icons on the Windows Desktop, and the Windows Logo Start Menu button. You can click from either to start Firefox. A better location to click from is the Quick Launch, you can drag either button from there to create a link in your Quick Launch (best place to click from) if you have it.

If you did not do that then you would find it under the "All Program" in the Windows Start Menu. You can "Pin to Start Menu" (ok), or to "Task Bar" (not recommended, wastes space to pin things and is confusing).

Windows 7 hid the Quick Launch, but you can restore that. You can have the first few items in your Quick Launch show up on Windows Task Bar to the left of the Quick Launch button [>>], which for me includes "Firefox", and "My Computer". See item #12 on my Windows 7 page "Restore Quick Launch to Win7".
