Why is there a second tab (New Tab) there, that you can't delete, after updating to 6.02???

I am running WindowsXp. After updating to Firefox6.02 a second tab was there after my default "Google" tab. The second tab has the words "New Tab" on it and when you click the "X" button on the tab, it doesn't close. When you go to close Firefox a warning box/window pops up to tell you that you have 2 tabs open and asks if it is ok to close. I thought that there might have been a problem with the update. So I uninstalled Firefox and then re-installed it. Same thing happened, 2 tabs. Any ideas???

Chosen solution

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well. Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Thanks Cor-el for you help. Deleting the "sessionstore.js" file didn't get rid of the second tab. Changing the Appearance to "Default" didn't do anything. So I started going through the extensions one by one, disabling them, shutting down Firefox, re-opening it to see if the second tab had gone. It turned out to be "ImageTweak 0.23" that was causing the problem. As soon as I disabled it and re-opened Fixfox the second tab was gone. Once again thank you for all the great advice.
