There is no key icon on the left side of my location bar. How do I get Firefox to save passwords?
When I enter a new password, Firefox is not showing me the key icon to the left of the location bar and asking me if I want Firefox to remember the password. I can't figure out how to activate this feature, even on the Tools/Option/Security menu.

See
- Password manager - Remember, delete, change and import saved passwords in Firefox
- Usernames and passwords are not saved <-- clickable link (blue) --
Maybe you have inadvertently set permanent private browsing, read the two articles linked above.
Thanks, but that's not the problem. Nor is the answer anywhere in the two articles you cite. At least so far as I can see after numerous readings.

What is happening
- are you able to see your stored pass words and logins ?
as explained in the linked article, from my last post above.- if you are able to view passwords, what happens if you try to delete one of the old existing ones does that work ?
- are you saying firefox asks for passwords but does not save them even though you are apparently able to enter them ?
Are you using any cleaning utilities that may be able to delete new passwords ?
P.S. The next step is to try firefox's safe mode
- but do not make changes in the first options window you see just click on continue
- use only the default theme
- also disable all plugins whilst in safe mode if you still have problems.

YES if you are able to view passwords, what happens if you try to delete one of the old existing ones does that work ? are you saying firefox asks for passwords but does not save them even though you are apparently able to enter them ? NO; FIREFOX ASKS IF YOU WANT TO SAVE SOME PASSWORDS BUT NOT OTHERS. COULD THE LATTER HAVE A BUILT-IN WAY OF PREVENTING FIREFOX FROM ASKING?
Are you using any cleaning utilities that may be able to delete new passwords ?
P.S. The next step is to try firefox's Safe Mode I DID; IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE.

Yes certain sites may prevent you from saving passwords, maybe that is the problem
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
Not the problem; private browsing not selected.
I think refusal to save certain passwords is site specific.
Thanks for suggestion.

The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving the name and password.
You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.

This looks as if it might work. Being--what, stupid?--I have to figure out how to do the proper entries. This is going to take me a while.
Thank you,

You can create a new bookmark (name: Remember Password) on the Bookmarks Toolbar via the right-click context menu and paste the JavaScript bookmarklet code including the javascript: label in the location field.
You can create a bookmark with the JavaScript code via a right-click on the "Remember Password" link on the squarefree.com website and choose "Bookmark This Link" and select the "Bookmarks Toolbar" as the destination folder for easy access.
You need to use the "Remember Password" bookmarklet before or after filling the name and password field on the website with the login form, but before submitting the login form by clicking a button on the web page.
