no history after June 20, cannot bookmark, reset does not fix
I have been having problems with firefox of late. I am using 24.6.0. There are several issues which are likely connected. I cannot bookmark anything using the "bookmark this page". My history seems to have stopped remembering on June 20. There is nothing newer shown. Most exasperating, after firefox is open for a few minutes, I cannot use an open page of maps.google.com, nor type in a new location to display...the page is unresponsive, or, seemingly links don't work on other pages. I have to close firefox and re-open it many times a day.(things work for a while then stop) Links cease working sometimes (of this I am not positive)."recently closed tabs" has the correct last few tabs, however, "recently closed windows" has "error page" for the last three entries. Also, when i begin to type in an url in the address bar, firefox will not anticipate and make suggestions.Usually I type "amaz" and then enter and I get amazon. Now it goes to google as a search parameter. It went through a period of crashing with certain websites, over and over.error messages and requests for help from mozilla ......nothing. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.Didn't work. I am stumped
safe mode did not help. performed reset. maybe fixed,Now it completes(makes suggestions filling in url)
but there is still no "july" in history and history doesn't show recent history (last listing June 20). downloaded malwarebytes and scanned. No problems detected

Firefox's Reset feature will restore the default settings, but it cannot re-create history that was not saved (whether due to settings, an add-on, or database corruption) or which was cleared (whether due to settings, an add-on, or external privacy software).
After you've had an opportunity to run with the reset Firefox for a few hours, can you update us on the remaining issues?
please read my entire report. History is not being recorded. It stops with June 20. there is no july. When i try to bookmark a page I get no pop up window asking me where to put it. I cannot "drag" a url to the toolbar.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

now I notice that maybe as a result of reset, i lost record of all downloads (which I had looked at this morning)back to June 20. Something happened on June 20 or 21.
rebooted the computer. lost icons from bookmarks toolbar, lost all history (previously I had from June 20 and before). However I now get drop down window when i try to bookmark. Maybe reset needs to be followed by reboot???Can I extract history somehow from the backup made before reset ?
ok. seems like history is now recording, and bookmarks may also be functioning.I think reset may have worked (needed to be rebooted afterwards), but in the process I lost stuff. Is there any way to get back the old history from somewhere?
The Reset features creates a folder on your desktop named Old Firefox Data, and that contains your old settings folder. It's challenging to extract the relevant parts without reproducing the problems you had before, but maybe it's worth a try. What would you want to recover?
The history for one thing. Download list is another. Icons (navicons) from the bookmarks.(bookmarks are in place but the unique icons are gone).
If there had been a problem with the places.sqlite database file that stores bookmarks and history in that previous profile then it wouldn't be a good idea to recover this file to get back the history including the download history, so be cautious with trying that.
Maybe you can use this utility to access that places.sqlite file and export the history.
thanks very much but the link seems to be dead
Sorry about the broken link. They have changed the program name to BrowsingHistoryView since I last checked it
As you appear to be using Firefox ESR you could consider consulting your Company IT department for advice. They may well be able to look at the machine directly and give you a solution faster than we can.
I do not have a "company". I am using esr because the regular version had a problem with copy paste.
What was the copy and paste problem maybe that is something we are able to help with, and do you remember which version of Firefox you first saw the copy and paste issue in ?
https://www.google.com/search?q=firefox+copy+paste+problem&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a it was all over the internet at the time.
