I tried to fix an issue with deletion of emails, but it did not work. What would be my next step to enable mail deletion?

I was unable to delete emails, so i tried to empty the deleted items, but it also removed the folder. I closed thunderbird, found this support and the post regarding deleting profile trash files. I re-opened thunderbird to locate profile folders and noticed the deleted items folder and files had returned. I closed thunderbird as per instructions, and removed trash files from the profile folders. Upon restarting thunderbird the deleted items folder was still there with deleted messages, and I was still unable to delete any further msg's or empty the bin without the folder also vanishing.

Turned out that my anti-virus was doing a scheduled scan and had found a virus in an email attachment in my deleted items folder, thus nothing being able to do during the scan.
