Google Play crashes when updating from Firefox 38.0.1

more options

I have a Motorola Droid 3 running Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4). It is running Firefox 38.0.1. Google Play shows that an update for Firefox is available. When I try to install that update, Google Play crashes. I tried checking for updates directly from Firefox, and it tells me there is no update available (even though I know that 38.0.5 is the current version).

Any ideas about what is going on or how to fix it? I've cleared cache and memory for Google Play - but that doesn't help. I've considered uninstalling either Firefox or Google Play and reinstalling - but I'm not sure whether that could leave me in worse shape.

Thanks.

Mozilla cannot fix issues with Google Play. Google has a forum at https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/play

If a Firefox update crashes Google Play, it's not obvious where the problem lies - very possibly with both products.
