My settings are to erase all history after closing, but I just found days of history under "History".

The Question says it all. What happened? Conclusion: Privacy settings cannot be trusted? I can't replicate this; now when I go to "History" nothing is listed. But a very long list confronted me a moment before -- and they did all seem to be sites I had visited.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

  • Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

When you want to run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode then temporarily switch to normal mode and see if that allows to clear the history.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder and possibly delete the places.sqlite file manually to clear all history.
