How do I stop a program from opening in firefox even though not default browser

My work laptop uses windows 7 and contains programs which can only run in IE. I downloaded firefox as I like to use it to browse and for a specific add on programme I use when writing scientific papers. IE is set as default browser. Now one of my work programs tries to open in firefox every time. It doesnt work when opening in firefox. How can I stop t from doing this?
