Why does my Trash folder contain multiple copies of deleted messages

I probably don't empty my Trash folder often enough, but when I went to do so today I found that it contained multiple copies (same date and time) of many messages. Frequently up to twelve copies (but never more than twelve, I think).

I could understand duplicates, perhaps; sometimes the same message is received more than once, but why so many? Does it actually matter? It certainly makes the Trash folder far bigger than it ought to be.

Are these messages you sent or messages you received? Thunderbird doesn't handle saving of message drafts on the server too well and sometimes keeps copies of older versions of your sent messages, that were auto-saved during the creation of your message. If this is the case for you, maybe change the location of your draft messages to local folders or change the time for auto-save of messages.

These are messages I have received. As I said, I can understand receiving a message twice, but not that I'd receive lots of messages twelve times! Thunderbird seems to be making copies somehow!
