I believe when I opened Thunderbird in the past, it opened to the unified INBOX. Now it seems to open in the last folder I was in when I closed TB..how can I get it to go back to opening in the unified inbox?

Thunderbird will remember what folder you were viewing when you exit and when restarted it will reopen on that folder allowing you to resume where you left off. This is the normal case. So if you select Unified Inbox and exit then it will reopen on Unified Inbox.
