Entries under All Mail appear in the correct date order, the new ones at the top, but Inbox entries are completely random. I have clicked the small icon on the right hand side and selected order received (whilst in inbox view), but it makes no difference. All Mail display is cluttered with Sent items but it is the only view I can use. Whilst in All Mail view there is a small arrow beside the icon, which switched date order top to bottom, but the arrow is missing in Inbox view.

Chosen solution

oh and the little arrow will be on another column, it will be on whatever column the list is sorted by pointing in the direction of the sort, ascending or descending.

why not try clicking on the date heading, twice if it sorts oldest to newest. on the first click

For some unfathomable reason it was the arrow by the side of recipients that did the trick - I had never thought of trying that. Thank you.
