Thunderbird email list displays without subject - how do I get it back?
PROBLEM: Earlier today my email was working just fine; I did not make any changes, but all of a sudden, the displayed list of emails does not show the subjects. Only some folders are affected.
WHAT I TRIED:
- I clicked to show the "Select columns to display" box on both the affected and unaffected folders; neither includes "subject" as a choice.
- I could not find anything applicable to this problem on your Help website.
- I made sure my version of Thunderbird is up-to-date.
I am sending two images, one of a folder that still shows the subject, and one of a folder that does not.
The only other things that looks a bit unusual to me are two columns that I don't remember seeing previously, one before the "Correspondents" column on both folders - it looks like two closely placed dots, and has single dots entered into the list - and on one of the folders, a strange symbol before the "Date" column. Apparently these have something to do with sorting. The only reason I mention these is in case they remind you of something that might be helpful - I'm perfectly happy ignoring them.
Please help me get my subject column back. Thank you.
Chosen solution
I clicked to show the "Select columns to display" box on both the affected and unaffected folders; neither includes "subject" as a choice.
Try the 'Restore Column Order' menu item.
If that doesn't help open a folder that has the correct columns, then click the selector icon at the end of the column buttons, Apply columns to... and select the defective folder.

'Restore Column Order' didn't help, but your second suggestion (open a folder that has the correct columns, click the selector icon at the end of the column buttons, Apply columns to... and select the defective folder) worked beautifully! Thank you very much for your help!
EASILY 30 years of history in here, and NONE of those suggestions work. Not a single folder shows "Subject" . and everything is up to date ... even with a New Mac Mini cptr!! Why is Mozilla not helping on this??
Still,no change. Not a single folder shows "Subject" . and everything is up to date ... even with a New Mac Mini cptr!! Any suggestions??

odd .. why would the subject be called "Solved" when it is NOT solved ... given that the "find a folder with the columns" does NOT work??
For Inbox, Drafts, Sent ..and alll elsewhere ... there are NO subject titles showing, and NO subject column titled for such!! And, "Restore column Order" does nothing to help. ... Altho this Tbird data base extends back into the LAST century .. WITH NO SUBJECT COLUMNS OR TITLES ANYWHERE! Perhaps 3-4 months now, not sure.
I would like to re-install T-bird, to see if that helps ... but how to do that without losing my YEARS of important emails .. personal and Non-profit org??!!
my ancient Mac tech guy will visit end of next week, and we will discuss further. If you have further suggestions, please send. thanks a bunch, ananda
Hi Amanda - I noticed that you are still having trouble with Thunderbird email not showing descriptions. I got my descriptions back in kind of a round-about way, but this will only work if some of your folders have not been affected by the problem, and that doesn't seem to be the case for you.
I do have a thought about preventing the loss of your email if you reinstall - anything that is also on another service, like msn.com or gmail.com, should not be affected, and you could reload it after your reinstall. The only things you might lose, is if you have some old emails that you have moved offline, to "local folders". This could be avoided if you can find them on your computer and back them up somewhere independent of Thunderbird. Alternatively, you could try moving them back online before you reinstall.
I hope this helps.
I have tried ALL of the above. Program was working perfectly until update to 78.4.0 this past week. Please, is there someway to get this fixed? Thunderbird was the absolute best email platform until this happened.
