Below is what the dialog box contained. I checked all the boxes and chose the "make changes and restart" option. Nothing popped up to indicate I was making permanent changes...no "are you sure you want to do this" type stuff...nothing.

firefox safe mode firefox is now running in safe mode, which temporarily disables your custom settings, themes and extensions.

you can make some or all of these changes permanent:

[]disable all add ons []reset toolbars and controls []delete all bookmarks except for backups []reset all user prefernces to defaults []restore default search engines

[make changes and restart] [continue in safe mode] [exit]

Chosen solution

You can restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox

You can re-enable the extensions in Tools > Add-ons > Extensions

You will have to redo the Toolbar Customization and preferred settings in Tools > Options

Thanks,

I posted my question in a panic last night. After posting it, I discovered all the things you've suggested. Still, it's helpful just to know that I'm on the right track. So once again, thanks.

I just wish there had been some kind of warning that what I was about to do would be (almost)permanent.
