Some laptops have a switch somewhere on the machine, usually underneath which you can use to prevent the laptop from connecting to the Internet.

Can you connect with Internet Explorer? If you can, then it may be that your firewall is blocking the connection. See Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet
