Every day I get a message saying to update Firefox but it does not connect to the update server. I have manually updated several times.

I use Windows XP and have Firefox set to update automatically. Every day when I open Firefox, I get a message saying that it is strongly recommended that I install an update. I press next to connect to the update server but it does not connect no matter how long I leave it. I have updated manually several times but still get the message.

Please do the following.

  1. Go to Download Firefox 4.0.1 and download the installation file to your desktop.

  2. Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to "Mozilla Firefox" and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).

  3. Then reboot and delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

  4. Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.

Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

After you complete the installation, go to the Plugins Check page and update where necessary.
