I have used View=> Toolbars => and ticked off all the toolbars that I want to appear. BUT the add on toolbar shows up blank (i.e. toolbar but no add ons). AND the new customized toolbar I created is not even listed in the available toolbars to tick off or not. The only way I can get it to show up (but not to function) is by clicking the customize button. The toolbar remains open only so long as the customize window does, and I can add/remove/rearrange icons, but not use any of their functions (eg. I added a new window button to the custom toolbar but when I click it of course nothing happens, because another window -- the customize window -- is still open). I need some way of locking this toolbar so I can access the buttons to use them please!!! Btw am using Windows 8 and just switched from IE (and fearing I'll have to switch back again...) Tnx so much.

I think that suggests that what you actually did was customise the addons toolbar. Firefox is fairly flexible and will for instance let you put the print icon on the add-ons toolbar or the bookmarks toolbar, and not just on a new user designed custom toolbar.

Many add-ons are designed by their developers not to make use of the add-on toolbar. Some add-ons show up on other menus. Collusion shows also in the Tools menu. Some use the add-ons page as an interface for settings or results.

Only certain add-ons actually make use of the add-on bar. Quite possibly none of yours use the add-on bar.

As a test Install something that is known to use the add-on bar you can always uninstall it or disable it afterwards.

Custom addon bars must include some content

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

Gillemar says: thanks everybody for your help! I guess the question I posted was really 2 questions. John99's solution about test-installing collusion showed that the add on toolbar is working (for that add on anyway), so now I just have to see if I can figure out how to make other addons show... any ideas? And I also discovered that for whatever reason when I turn on the Bookmarks toolbar, what actually shows up is my missing custom toolbar... not sure what's going on with that but I'm happy about it! :)

Thanks for the solutions. I still think it was the bookmarks toolbar I customized, and the reason the new toolbar I created didn't show up must be that I didn't actually drop anything into it, as one of the articles you led me to suggests. And you must be right that the other addons just aren't designed to show on a toolbar. I'll look for them elsewhere. Have a great one everybody!
