When I installed Thunderbird on my Mac, I clicked the option to use my OSX address book and it showed all the addresses. But when I update my address book (the original address book on my Mac - changes can't be made from within Thunderbird), the changes are not reflected in Thunderbird. How can I keep Thunderbird in sync with my Mac Address book.

As Thunderbird has read only access to the MAC OSX address book. if it is not working it is an issue with your mac not allowing updates to be displayed.
