I have recently removed version 29 which was installed without my permission and reverted to version 28, which was FAR better. I now have a number of right click options for highlight, cut, copy and paste from web pages. I don't see anywhere to attach screenshots but I have FOUR of them, all showing different options for highlight, cut, copy or paste and they are all ridiculous. What can I do to resolve this? Cheers.

OK. Screenshots added. 1) Dozens of options, of which only cut, copy, paste are needed for the highlighted text. The text is not a video, is not an audio file, is not a plugin, stupid to set as desktop, cannot be deleted. 2) Highlighted text is NOT a link. 3) Duh. No idea what this right click option is about. 4) This is the only right click option I want. Unfortunately, it only appears about once in fifty right clicks.

It seems I can only add screenshots if I reply to my own question. Really inconvenient.

Please update to Firefox 30. 28 is not secure or supported. If you don't like the look of 30 you can make it look exactly like 28. How to make the new Firefox look like the old Firefox

I removed version 29 because it deleted the log ins and passwords for EVERY site I visit. It took me days to retrieve them all individually. I am not the first Firefox user that this happened to, as I have been reading on the forum. I have absolutely no intentions of updating to version 30 in case the same thing happens. The way FF is heading lately, I might just bail out and go to Chrome.

The issue of losing your logins is definitely not something that should have happened. Did you come to this site to get help after you lost them? We probably could have helped you recover them without you having to manually re-enter all that information.

I'd suggest you do this:

I did visit the forum but there was no solution to retrieving my lost information. This is the link to another user complaining about the same problem....

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997922?esab=a&s=passwords+in+version+29+&r=11&as=s

I have been very disappointed with the changes Mozilla is constantly making to FF. I am quite happy to stay with FF 28, if I could only get the c, c and p to work again. Can you help with that?

Such an issue where you see all possible items in the right-click context menu can be caused by an installed extension.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
more options

I only have two add-ons installed : Better Privacy 1.68 and Saved Password Editor 2.7.2. With Firefox in Safe Mode and both of these disabled the problem persists. Hardware acceleration is also disabled.

What is supposed to happen with your second set of instructions : Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance? There is no Reset button, only Default 28.0 / Default theme and, underlined, More.

I have gone through the articles in the links you posted but have not been able to find anything that is in conflict. I do not want to re-install FF as I am using v. 28 with no intention of updating to v 30. v29 is what caused me this headache in the first place.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

I don't WANT to upgrade! I was hoping this could be solved in v 28. If not, then I will just live with it. Thanks.

Please update to 30, you shouldn't be getting such a poor experience that you are getting with 28

This is either caused by an extension or something is wrong with the current Firefox installation. Safe mode didn't help and that would rule out an extension issue and that would leave an issue with the current installation open.

Note that it isn't safe to stay with an older Firefox version that has disclosed security vulnerabilities.

What specific reasons do you have that you do not want to update?

To : Tyler Downer and cor-el :

The last time I updated to the latest version was when v29 was released. I noted above the reason I uninstalled v29 and reverted back to v28. ......

It took me so long to retrieve all my information that I have absolutely no wish to relive the nightmare.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?

There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically. The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server. If this "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you will have to sign in once again.

Details like websites remembering you (log you in automatically) are stored in a cookie.

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.

"Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?"

When FF v29 installed without my permission I no longer had access to ANY passwords or user names from over 700 sites. The add-on I use, Saved Passwords 2.7.2 was completely empty.

I am aware of all the information you mention above, but in that instance it did not help as there were no passwords to manage. I had to go to each site individually, try to guess at the user name then enter 'Forgot password?' information. If that did not work then I had to create a new account. It was a nightmare. I do not wish to have to repeat it,.
