The smtp port number is wrong. 993 is for incoming mail.

All of my gmail smtp settings use 465.

How did yours get that way?

I think we need to see your account settings.

Go to Help|Troubleshooting Information Clear the checkbox labelled "Include account names" Click the button "Copy text to clipboard"

In your reply here, paste (ctrl+v, or right-click|paste)

Check it over for anything you'd like not to share. You can remove all the printer and font stuff, since it isn't likely to be relevant.

The smtp port number is wrong. 993 is for incoming mail.

All of my gmail smtp settings use 465.

How did yours get that way?

more options

Mine got that way because I manually set up my accounts, since the auto set up has never worked for me. I must have just thought I saw that one or something to get it up there. However, when I changed the port to 465, an error message kept coming up saying --------@gmail.com is not an IMAP 4 server.

Thanks for your help thunderbird is now working.

more options

No, 465 is for outgoing aka SMTP

Tools|Account Settings

Last "account" in the list is "Outgoing Server (SMTP)"

Select that, select the gmaill smtp entry, click "Edit", change its port setting to 465.

And you'll need to go back to the incoming account and make sure that's set to use port 993.
