Is it possible to shut off message receiving while on vacation?
I want to completely eliminate any e-mails coming into my computer while on vacation. I would like a notice that no e-mails are being accepted and to please contact me after such-and-such date. Is this possible?

You can use filters and vacation response.
You can set some filter to delete or answer emails while you are in vacation.
Turn your computer off or at least close Thunderbird and set a vacation message on your providers web mail page.
I've left a message about being out of town, yada, yada, yada. But the "automatic" e-mails just keep coming and junk it up, so that when I open it after a week's vacation, there are 200 junk e-mails waiting for me.
Your providers server is going to accept emails to your Inbox. That is what you pay them for. You have no control over that.
