I have every Email Web Page extension there is; I just want to open a link in Apple Mail from a Firefox web page. Nothing works. What gives?

I think (Apple) Mail is a stand-alone application, and not a website, is that correct? Firefox should have detected Mail if it was your default mail application, and added it to the list on the Applications panel of the Preferences page. What does your Preferences page list for mailto links? This article describes the steps to locate that setting: Change the program used to open email links. Is the drop-down only showing Gmail and Yahoo?

Yes I have it set to Use Mail (the Apple Mail program) in Firefox Applications panel on the Preferences page; and Apple Mail is my default email ) Still doesn't work. Very strange.

Also tried "default mail" ; doesn't work.

Any other procedures I might try. What you suggested _should work

Unfortunately, the settings file which stores those particular preferences sometimes becomes corrupted. Since the file is difficult to read/edit, we generally suggest renaming it and letting Firefox start a new one. Here's how:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit or on Mac it might be Firefox > Quit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename mimeTypes.rdf to something like mimeTypes.old (in case you need to recover it later).

Start Firefox back up again, and return to the Application preferences to select your preferred mailto handler. While you're here, also re-select your preference for PDFs.

Any improvement?

Followed precise procedure; still doesn't work ; whether I select use mail; or use mail default or even use gmail. Should I throw out the old mimes file? Will repeat....

Strange

Thanks

Well, on Windows, I would suggest checking the registry, but... on Mac I'm not sure what to try next.

The renamed mimeTypes.old is invisible to Firefox, so you can ignore it.

Actually, in case one of your mailto-related extensions is now interfering, could you disable those or do a general "safe mode" test?

Firefox's Safe Mode is a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?
