Why are links clicked on not opening?
When I click on a link it use to open the link automatically. Now I get notified that a window can be opened. A real pain in the ass!

There was a prompt introducing the new feature and you opted into it. It can be disable in the settings. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/open-links-background-later-viewing-firefox-android for details.
