Why does FireFox gradually use more and more RAM with seemingly no limit?

Although FireFox is my most favoured browser, it has recently started acting strange and taking up way more RAM than it should.

Usually it idled at around 400MB used, but nowadays I'll open it up for 20 minutes, one tab, one window, and it'll have jumped to over a gigabyte, the highest I've seen being 3GB. I've tried all the safe mode stuff I see copypasted on the forums, but nothing works. It just seems to keep eating up RAM.

This shouldn't be happening, and it's honestly a little concerning.
