Hi BirdieBob, two other users posted nearly the identical issue this morning:

Is it possible all of you use the same extension? For example, Adblock Plus updated to version 3.0 today, and as with any major version update, it might have a few issues the developers didn't notice.

Hmm, if you click it a second time, does the expected page load?

Two questions:

(1) Is your home page still set to what you expect? See: How to set the home page.

(2) What is going on with your new tab page (click the + button or Ctrl+t): do you have the "Activity Stream" design? You can tell by clicking the "cog" or "wheel" on the right side of the page and looking at the menu. The classic design has a short menu with a few choices, and the Activity Stream design has a long list of categories with descriptions.

Yes, clicking it a second time loads the home page. A single click is all that was ever required previously. So thanks for that.

The home page is correctly set (and unchanged ) to blank (about:blank).

I have the classic design not Activity Stream.

Is this problem specific to the home page button?

  • Does the keyboard shortcut Alt+Home have the same problem?
  • Are other kinds of navigation from the user interface area affected, such as using a bookmark to replace the current page in the tab, or typing an address in the address bar?

Behavior is the same with Alt+Home: Tab name changes to New Tab but then requires click on Home icon to load home page.

Other navigation appears to be OK including using a bookmark to replace the current page in the tab, or typing an address in the address bar

multiple "home" clicks don't do anything -- the screen retains whatever the last page loaded was. Started this morning, no changes to home page or any other component

Could be a problem with one of the extensions like "Open in IE 1.5.0.1-signed" (we have seen more issues with IE related extensions).

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Hi jusher2000:

I do use Adblock Plus -- have for many years. I experienced problems with it this morning after the update.. Coincidentally, I decided to replace it with uBlock at least until the update issues are resolved. I removed Adblock Plus and installed uBlock about an hour ago. Lo and behold, a single click on the Home icon now takes to the home page.

Looks like you were right and Adblock Plus' update was the culprit. Thanks for the help and I will mark this issue resolved for me.

cor-el:

Thanks for the Open In IE suggestion but as I said above, The Adblock Plus update appears to have been the problem, at least for me. I have Open in IE but given your feedback and the fact that I haven't used it for a long time, I went ahead and removed that as well to avoid any future issue with it.
