Are there any plans/efforts to create a Thunderbird plug-in that will provide the MAPI protocol, allowing third-party software to send & receive emails using the Thunderbird platform, similar Outlook Express?

TB already supports SimpleMAPI. If the sending app also supports it, it should work, but it can sometimes be tricky to succeed. Search this forum for examples of specific apps.
