How to stop notifications from specific senders / folders?

Thunderbird is giving me notifications from all senders and there doesn't seem to be an option to not get notifications from particular senders - or from things that've been given a rule to go into a different folder.

I only want to be receiving notifications from e-mails that remain in the inbox (or other folders) AFTER filtering rules have been applied.

Is there anything I should be doing within the thunderbird application itself, or is this something that requires an add-on?

notifications are either on or off. there is not granularity at all.
