This error message appeared today: Sending of the message failed. The Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.halglatzer.com does not seem to support encrypted passwords. If you just set up the account, try changing the 'Authentication method' in 'Account settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)' to 'Normal password'.

But this is not a new account - I have used Thunderbird for many years - and there is no such setting in the STMP section at Network Solutions. It seems that the problem lies with Thunderbird.

What has caused it, and How do I recover the ability to send emails?

According to the NS support site, the outgoing server should be mail.halglatzer.com on port 587, connection security = none, authentication = password transmitted insecurely, User Name = email address.

However, other sections about setting up email suggest smtp.halglatzer.com on 465, SSL/TLS, Normal password. No mention of encrypted passwords, as opposed to encrypted connections (SSL).

Make sure you don't have an antivirus scanning outgoing mail and interfering with the connection.
