Why do I suddenly have two inboxes and two trash folders?

One of our two computers died. I installed Thunderbird on the replacement computer and copied the appropriate files from the old hard drive to the new one. All of the emails, folders, etc. are now seen normally on the new computer except for having two Inbox and two Trash folders as shown in the attached screen snap. Incoming emails that are selected by the filters appear in their proper folder under "Local Folders". Emails that are not selected by filters appear in the Inbox under the doubletwins@j7000.com folder.

I tested this by sending an email to doubletwins@j7000.com and the filter placed it in the correct folder under Local Folders. Then I disabled the filter and sent an identical email to doubletwins@j7000.com again. This time it was placed in Inbox under doubletwins@j7000.com.

How can I get all incoming emails to go the Inbox under Local Files?

Thank you so much for any help.

re : All of the emails, folders, etc. are now seen normally on the new computer except for having two Inbox and two Trash folders as shown in the attached screen snap.

There is nothing wrong with the image you posted. Every mail account has it's own set of folders. This is normal. All IMAP mail accounts must only use their own set of folders because they synchronise with server folders.

However, clearly this is not 'normal' for you....I'm going to presume that the mail account is a POP mail account which previously was set up as a deferred account - more commonly known as 'Global Inbox'.

In these cases, no POP accounts get a set of their own folders because they have been designed to auto use the 'Local Folders' mail account set of folders. The Pop mail account does not display at all in the Folder Pane.

You need to do the following:

  • Right click on Pop mail account name folder in Folder Pane and select 'SEttings'
  • Select 'Copies & Folders'
  • For each setting - Sent , Draft, Template, Archive - you must choose 'Other' and select the respect folder in 'Local Folders' mail account.
  • eg: 'Sent on Local Folders'
  • Then do the same in the 'Junk Settings' - choose 'Other' and select 'Junk on Local Folders'

Finally:

  • Select 'Server Settings'
  • click on 'Advanced' button
  • Select 'Inbox for different account'
  • click on 'Choose account' drop down and sel;ect 'Global Inbox (Local Folders)'
  • select 'Include this server when getting new mail'
  • click on 'OK'

Now you must Exit Thunderbird. Wait a few moments for background processes to complete and restart Thunderbird.

Thank you very much. That worked perfectly (almost). I had to reenter my filters but other than that your fix was perfect. It was easy to read and follow your directions.

Thanks again.
