firefox gtes stuck creating endless tabs

After clicking on a link or subwindow on a site an endless number of tabs open. yesterday I could quit FF and restart my search. after rebooting computer, same as above but quit didn't work - tabs just kept opening like the socerer's apprentice. Needed Cntrl/Alt/Del to stop it
