I use mac snow leopard on i book and just updated software from online recommendations. When I opened Firefox most of my preferences were gone including add-ons (like Stumble Upon), and a variety of preferences, specifically my passwords for various websites. I have Time machine back-ups but have no idea how to retrieve the specifics I have lost. Help!

It sounds like a new profile was created (user data is stored in a profile). This article should help - Recover important data from an old profile.

You will need to find the old profile folder, this link may help with that - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

Another option is to open up the profile manager, if 2 profiles are listed try switching to the other profile, see managing profiles for details.
