tried safe mode, no good. turned of antivirus, no good. Entirely uninstalled, got rid of profile and then installed...no good. I like FF but I don't know how much time I can give to this before trying another browser.

Delete downloads.sqlite (plus downloads.rdf, if it exists) in the Profile Folder See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_save_or_download_files#Manually_delete_download_history
