When I tried to open FF4, I got a message that it is not supported by this system (OSX 10.4.11). What's going on?

I was using FF 3.16 and tried to update to FF4. When I moved the icon to the applications folder, it replaced FF3. When I tried to open FF4, I got the message that this system does not support the program. Tried re-downloading and reinstalling - same result except that there is a white circle & slash superimposed on the FF icon. Shut down computer & restarted with same result. Please help!

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

Unfortunately the OSX 10.4 is not supported for Firefox 4. Please see the System Requirements page http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/4.0/system-requirements/ for specifics.

Also please see the discussion in this newgroup post for a more detailed explanation: http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.planning/browse_thread/thread/7d3a647586bab993/af556fc8e7e7a3f5?q=PPC&lnk=ol&

Thank you both for the explanation. Unfortunately, I spent an entire afternoon before I found the answer and a link to download FF 3.16 (which solved the problem).

Afterward I looked carefully at the page that entices FF users to update to FF4. I did not see any indication that Mac OSX 5 or higher is needed to run FF4. I think that the page designer should include a "black box warning" (a la FDA) that trying to run FF4 with any Mac OSX less than 5 causes BIG problems.

I agree with you cbmartin, there is no system requirements info in any obvious place. I wasted hours trying to sort out this problem. I note that FF4 does not support PowerPC Macs either. It appears that you don't exist these days unless you have an Intel processor. Do they expect us to scrap our expensive 5 year old, perfectly good computers and pay £2.5k for a new one. Big f***ing joke!
