Why does Firefox download an update, when you mearly just ask it to "check" for updates?

Under 'Help - About Firefox', why is it that Firefox will download an update, when you mearly just ask it to "check" for updates? How can I stop it from fully downloading the update and just have it only check for one and not waste my bandwidth if I don't actually want to download it? I find this intrusive. Sure I can choose not to "apply" it, but this is only after it's already downloaded it! This doesn't make sense to me. It's a waste of bandwidth if I don't actually want it.

Sorry, that is the way it is done in Firefox 4+ versions, and if automatic update for Firefox is enabled the "check for updates" is done by merely opening About > Firefox dialog box, no "button" to press.

Not cool. I actually liked Firefox until this kind of thing started. Seems like they're going the way of Microsoft and trying to ram updates down your throat whether you like it or not. I thought Mozilla was all about giving the user a lot of control over Firefox???... Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth to waste, and not everyone wants the updates. Not cool Mozilla, not cool.

Is there any official suggestion/comment box where I can express my discontent of this function?
