When I click on an email address on a web page, can't get my email account to come up so I can send an email

This happens all the time, a box comes up asking me to choose the application I want, it offers google, windows live, but not windows live hotmail which is what I have. If I choose windows live, an email blank comes up, not from my hotmail account, and it gets an error code when I try to send it.
