Why does focus shift abruptly from one (multitab) window to another?
This is an intermittent problem, which I find difficult to replicate consistently. I'll be typing something into the google search box or just doing normal surfing while the page is loading. Then suddenly the window will swap out for another one. I generally have 3+ windows open at a time (each with multiple tabs). The original window stays the same size: it's just placed behind the other window that gains focus.
Should I try Firefox Safe Mode or reset? If so, it will take a while to troubleshoot as the problem is difficult to replicate.

hi, the problem seams to be caused by latest adobe flash plugin. if you go to plugins and disable flash, then restart firefox on a google search, it will no longer jump back to search page, but page you click will stay open. adobe flash is an important plugin so a workaround or update needs to be found to resolve this issue.

Are there any pages open that other window that might be reloading automatically or otherwise run JavaScript that reload parts of it?
Good question. I'll keep an eye out, but the page that goes into focus is typically pretty generic. It's the page that loses focus which is more likely to be in the process of loading. Thanks for your reply.
